The Chairman

Professor Saeed A. Durrani

Chairman, Iqbal Academy (U.K.)

Chairman since 1987

A physicist by training — Government College, Lahore; a BA at Cambridge; a PhD and, in 1982, a DSc at Birmingham — Professor Durrani joined the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in 1963, moved to Oxford in 1967, and held a chair at the University of Birmingham from 1978 until 2004. His radiation research included work on the lunar samples returned by the NASA Apollo missions. He is a Founder-President of the Pakistan Third World Academy of Sciences, a Distinguished National Professor of Pakistan, and was Editor-in-Chief of Nuclear Tracks from 1977 to 1993.

The other half of his working life has been given to Iqbal. He is Secretary of the Majlis-i Iqbal, Lahore, and Joint Editor of the Iqbal Review; he has translated Iqbal's Persian and Urdu poetry — Asrar-i Khudi, the Javid Nama, Gulshan-i Raz-i Jadid and the Rumuz — and written the standard study of Iqbal's European years, Iqbal Europe mein, together with its companion volume of rarities, Navadir-i Iqbal Europe mein. The Academy's Vision Statement, Iqbal: A Bridge Between Civilizations, is his.

Under his chairmanship, from 1987, the Academy's work expanded into the sequence of international conferences, lectures, portraits and publications set out in its history.

In association

Associates & fellow academies

The Academy has worked since its earliest years with Iqbal Academy Pakistan, Lahore, with whom it has jointly hosted its commemorative conferences — among them the Schimmel seminar of 2003 and the Iqbal in Europe centenary of 2008. The figures below are associates of that long partnership rather than officers of the U.K. Trust.

Justice (Retd) Dr Javid Iqbal

Son of the poet-philosopher

Vice-President of the Governing Body, Iqbal Academy Pakistan, from 1985

Educated at Government College, Lahore — a BA with Honours in 1944, and gold medals in both English and Philosophy at MA — he took a PhD at Cambridge in 1954 and was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1956, as his father had been. Honorary doctorates followed from Villanova University in the United States (1989) and Seljuk University in Turkey (1990).

He was Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from 1982 to 1986, a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan from 1986 to 1989, and a Senator of Pakistan from 1993 to 1999; from 1986 to 1989 he was also Vice-Chairman of the OIC Centre for the Preservation of Islamic Cultural Heritage in Istanbul. From 1959 onwards he lectured internationally on the philosophy of Iqbal and of Rumi, and he wrote the standard biography of his father, Zinda Rood.
